A Vertical Profile Projector, also known as a profile projector or shadowgraph, is a precision optical instrument used for the measurement of 2D features of a part or component. It consists of an optical system that projects the silhouette or shadow of a part onto a screen, where it can be magnified and measured.

Here's how it generally works:

1. Part Placement: The part to be measured is placed on the stage of the projector.

2. Illumination: The part is illuminated from below, usually with a bright light source.

3. Projection: The optical system projects a magnified image of the part onto a screen positioned above the stage.

4. Measurement: The operator can then use various tools, such as micrometers or digital scales, to measure the dimensions of the projected image. Some modern profile projectors are equipped with digital measurement systems that can automatically measure dimensions and perform geometric tolerancing.

5. Data Recording: The measurements can be recorded manually or digitally for further analysis or documentation.
